SHIELD HeadQuarters:

“I think we have a lead Director Fury,” Natasha said, strolling into his office with her usual fervor. Yeah, he was having a discussion with Agent Hill. Yes, it could wait. SHIELD had nothing better to do, especially when HYDRA was seemingly busy with other things. And the missing persons investigations of Dr. Lounze and his daughter was on the top of the list right now. Especially when (F/n) Lounze was last seen with none other than the Winter Soldier.

“You’ve had a lot of leads, Director Romanoff...” The Director replied, obviously not that interested. “What makes you think this isn’t just another dead end?”

“Hear me out. Calvin Montgomery is (F/n)’s half brother. He also lives in Oregon, sir. We have evidence that Oregon is the site of an underground HYDRA base. Not to mention that Montgomery just spent a few hundred at Hilton Suites and at a grocery store there in Vancouver.”

“If you think that’s enough to get my appro-”

“A train was also going through Washington on that day, on it’s way to Oregon. The train was coming from Baltimore, which was where the Winter Soldier and Lounze was last seen.” The woman smirked, setting a file folder down on Fury’s desk. “With all due respect sir, I think this is a strong lead and I would rather check it out than do training all day.”
Director Fury opened the file, taking a look at it’s contents and raising an eyebrow. All the facts were accurate, it all seemed to match up. It was a lead.

“You and Agent Barton can leave in the morning. Get packed.”

~~~
The day didn’t turn out to be half as productive as you planned. All you wanted was rest. After being on the run for so long, a familiar bed was something you needed. Bucky hadn’t really spoken to you since you arrived; he seemed to be preoccupied. According to Cal, he’d spent most of the day in the arsenal. That only gave you a grim reminder that you had to make a plan soon. Time was running short. As far as you knew, your father was dead.
Then how would you know it was worth it?
Damnit, this whole ordeal was getting rough.
With a sigh, you rolled over on the bed and continued on to log into your email. You were using Cal’s laptop, which he graciously lent to you. It had been so long since you used a computer, it wasn’t even funny. There were two hundred unread emails in your inbox, most of them from Cal. There was no point in going through them now. It was probably just endless fretting. Fretting that probably would have been necessary if your life hadn’t been saved by Bucky.
Speaking of, a conversation was well needed between you two. You knew how condemning he could get on himself. All you needed to do was make sure he was alright. Especially if you were sharing a room with him (compliments of Cal). It gets pretty damn irritating when there’s unspoken tension in the air.
You sauntered out of your bedroom and down the hall, following the sound of voices. It sounded like Bucky and Cal were in the kitchen. Raiding the liquor cabinet, most likely. A drink sounded amazing, but it was never good for you before bed. It sounded like they were bonding. You’d come around later.
By the time you were back inside the room, you had accepted how sleepy you were. If the guys were going to stay up and talk, you had every right to go to bed.
You just hoped Cal wasn’t going to get too drunk.
Cal:
This was an interesting turn in events.
Yes, I felt a significant amount of shame for pretending like I didn’t know when in fact, I did. There was a very big price on little sister’s head. And I had to do everything I could to protect her. I was what could be considered... an ex-HYDRA employee. On the hideout. And everyone, even the ex’s, got the information on (F/n) Lounze.
Either way, I never even imagined that she would show up on my doorstep with the Winter Soldier. Yeah, he was hot, but he was most definitely not my type. I would give him up in a heartbeat, if it weren’t for little sister. I’d done my best to always take care of her, and I would continue to do so. Perhaps if I could get her to safety... so she wasn’t around when I gave HYDRA the location of the Winter Soldier...
Would it break her heart? Her feelings for a machine like him dissatisfied me. His feelings for a precious gem like her pissed me off. It was so brutally obvious, and it was making me sick. The outcome was inevitable. If he were ever to actually confess his feelings, if you would get too deep into this fantasy, your heart would end up mangled and broken. Just like mine.
I stared at him, pouring him another glass of whiskey. Could I trust him with my baby sister all drunk? It’s not like it mattered. The alcohol I was serving him was laced with my own creation; a truth serum. The serum held a new invented hormone that would give his brain the impression not to lie. It seemed to be working too, as he seemed to be answering each of my scientific questions truthfully. Questions about how he escaped, how his memories had begun to emerge. Now it was time for the real questions.
“You do know how dangerous it is for you to be hauling (F/n) around... right? One wrong step and she could be dead. Do you understand that?” I watched him, seeing nothing but dreariness in his face. His eyes were distant, his eyebrows were drawn together and his lips were pressed into a distasteful line of shame.
“Yes. I’ve kept my distance to keep her safe. Do you think she’d be better off if I hadn’t picked off the guys that tried to take her in the first place?”
Hmph. Looks like the truth serum did nothing about his attitude.
“No, of course not. I’m glad you rescued her, I owe you for that.” I couldn’t help but chuckle. As if I owed him anything. “Then tell me... why did you rescue her?”
The metal-armed soldier sighed and shrugged, finishing off his current glass of whiskey. How many glasses had he taken? Damn, he could hold his liquor. I was impressed. “I don’t know,” he replied. It had to be the truth. “I never meant to, trust me. An impulse, perhaps for change. I’d been a mindless tool for so long, it felt good to do something of my own decision.”
Interesting... so it wasn’t just for his benefit. He told me earlier about the files he was after, and how he made the deal with her. Little did he know that the files were in my bedroom. As much as I hated to think about my sweet sister getting hurt, I figured something had to be done. This... Bucky Barnes was bad news.
”Good to know... anyway, it’s late and I have work in the morning. I’m headed off to bed. Thanks for this, pal,” I nudged him, grinning as I left the drunk to his whiskey.
I had work to do.
I'm so sorry, guys. xD
Ah yeah, and I think I'm turning my Sweet Goodbyes oneshot into a prologue for a full fanfiction. Whaddya think?
